Kimono Tea Ceremony in Asakusa, Tokyo
The top-rated kimono tea ceremony experiences in Asakusa — Tokyo's most traditional neighbourhood, steps from Senso-ji Temple.
If you're going to do a kimono tea ceremony in Tokyo, Asakusa is the right neighbourhood for it. This is the part of the city that actually feels old — the wooden shopfronts, the smell of incense from Senso-ji, the rickshaw pullers who aren't just there for tourists. Doing a matcha tea ceremony in Asakusa inside this context gives the whole thing a weight that a Shibuya basement can't replicate. The tea you'll whisk — a bowl of usucha, thin tea prepared with a bamboo chasen whisk — has been prepared this exact way for 500 years. That lands differently when you can see a pagoda from the window.
What makes Asakusa specifically strong for this experience is the cluster quality. You have three distinct styles within walking distance of each other: the kimono-and-ceremony combination from GLOBA (our top pick, 4.9 stars across 200 bookings), the matcha-education-focused session with mochi making, and the stripped-back 45-minute ceremony for travellers who want the ritual without a 90-minute commitment. That variety matters — a tea ceremony and kimono experience in Tokyo should fit your schedule, not the other way round.
One thing worth knowing before you book: the tea used in every Japanese tea ceremony is matcha — specifically a high-grade, shade-grown powder that's whisked with hot water, no milk, no sweetener. What you're tasting is the cultivar, the terroir, and the preparation. The experiences here don't skip that context, which is partly why their ratings sit where they do.

Super fun activity for myself and my son. The teacher kept it fun and we made matcha and got to enjoy it instead of only served. And then they let you wear the rented kimonos until 6 pm for photos if you chose. It was a great deal. They even do your hair!
It was excellent. Erica was a fantastic host and everyone was very helpful and patient
We got to wear real Japanese kimonos and drink authentic matcha. The experience was amazing. Our guide was funny and she explained everything in perfect English.
It was excellent! It was very informative learning about the traditions. The Geisha costumes were very pretty and there were lots of opportunities for photos. You could have worn the costumes outside the tea house up to 1800 that day.
Really enjoyed this experience as well as learning a bit more about the Japanese culture.
